NOTE: Each artwork will be screened for adherence to all guidelines. Any entry not meeting all guidelines will be disallowed and will not be considered. Please read all guidelines carefully and thoroughly before submitting artwork and reach out if you have any questions. adelao@csusb.edu or patrice.cooley@sbcss.net

ELIGIBILITY All San Bernardino County middle school through 12th grade students that are currently enrolled in a visual arts course.

SUBMISSION DATES All artwork must be submitted online at https://youngartistsgallery2025.artcall.org/ between January 2 – January 31, 2025. No submissions will be accepted after 11:30 p.m. on January 31 at which point there will be no access to the submission website.

All digital submissions become the joint property of the participating student artist, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS), and RIMS California Arts Project, and may be used for educational purposes on the RIMS California Arts Project and SBCSS websites.

SUBMISSION LIMITATIONS

  • Each visual arts teacher at each school site may submit a maximum of four (4) pieces of student art completed during the 2024 - 2025 school year.
  • Do not submit multiple examples of the same project.
  • No more than one piece from a single student will be accepted. This includes work submitted from another teacher at the same site.
  • The visual art teacher must submit artwork and use a district email.
  • Teachers are encouraged to share the process with their students, but the teacher must be the submitter. All student and teacher contact, and other important information is taken from the online submission. Please input carefully, checking contact information, email, phone, address, names spelled correctly using appropriate capitalization. Please spell all school sites and districts out completely with no abbreviations.
  • Students must be currently enrolled in a visual arts course.

ORIGINAL ARTWORK

  • Original two- and three-dimensional artwork completed within the 2024 - 2025 school year may be submitted from any San Bernardino County middle school through 12th grade student currently enrolled in a visual arts course.
  • NO COPIED OR COPYRIGHTED ARTWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

  1. VISUAL ARTS CATEGORIES There are ten visual arts categories. If you have a question on which category to select, please email adelao@csusb.edu or patrice.cooley@sbcss.net.

CERAMICS & GLASS Three-dimensional artwork made from either clay or glass.

COMIC ART Comic art is juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

DIGITAL ART Artwork that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative process.

DRAWING A two-dimensional artwork made with non-wet media, such as, pencil, pen/ink, crayon, chalk, or charcoal.

FILM & ANIMATION Short films or animations of up to five minutes in length.

MIXED MEDIA Two-dimensional artwork that combines various traditional media, such as, paint, ink and/or collage.

PAINTING Artwork using water media, watercolor, or oil.

PHOTOGRAPHY Artwork that uses light to create images.

PRINTMAKING Artwork that is created by transferring ink from a prepared surface onto paper or another flat surface. Examples include but are not limited to engraving, monotype, woodcut, or serigraphy.

SCULPTURE Three-dimensional artwork that makes or represents a form by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques.

  1. JURIED IN WORK REQUIREMENTS

Description automatically generatedFRAMING REQUIREMENTS All artwork juried into the exhibition must be matted and framed with a hanging wire or chain.
  • No pre-routed single or double flush wall mounts can be used.
  • No sawtooth or unframed work will be accepted.
  • Consider the weight of the frame and glass or plexi-glass when deciding on wiring material as well as the material that the frame is made of before attaching D-rings or eye hooks.
  • D-rings or eye hooks should be used for attaching wire on framed artwork. NEVER use tape, hot glue, or staples!
  • D-rings or eye hooks should be attached approximately 1/3 of the frame’s length from the top of the artwork. Doing so will make the artwork hang flat on the wall.
  • Hanging wire for framed art should have slack approximately the width of 3 fingers. The wire should never be attached so long that it shows above the top of the work.
  • Braided picture hanging wire is best to use, not a slick wire that will allow the artwork to slide from side to side.
  • NO nylon fishing line or cotton string (they will stretch).
  • The hanging of the artwork needs to be tested in the classroom or home for 24 hours to make sure it hangs evenly and it can viably withstand being hung in the gallery for the duration of the show.
  • If the artwork is framed under glass or plastic, please clean smudges, dust, and debris on the inside of the glass before inserting artwork. Also, be mindful of static drawing in debris during the framing process.
  • Please be sure the work is labeled with artist and teacher names and title on the back of the work.

Sample Artist Statement:

For this artwork, I decided to draw the face of a young woman covered in different types of flowers with a black background. The significance behind this piece is to demonstrate how young girls usually struggle with self-image as they enter high school because they face big changes during adolescence. I chose to draw my younger cousin who is just entering high school. The flowers represent new beginnings and the blooming of self-confidence. I am trying to depict a young girl who embraces herself in a society that focuses on appearance and materialistic things.

I started by coloring the face of the subject with Prismacolor pencils, using light strokes so that I could layer the colors and build value. Once I was satisfied with the colors and layering, I colored the entire background with black colored pencil. I really like how this came out and it was fun experimenting with colored pencils. Although drawing with colored pencils takes a while to layer and blend, it was a medium I could easily control to produce the outcome I wanted.


  1. ANNUAL YOUNG ARTISTS’ GALLERY AWARDEES EXHIBITION DATES AND LOCATION

All student work juried in the show will be displayed in the Dutton Gallery and small gallery in the Visual Arts Building of California State University, San Bernardino from March 8 –17, 2025.

Reception and Awards Ceremony March 11, 2025, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

AWARDS Artwork receiving Middle School Best of Show, High School Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place, and Honorable Mention will be announced and recognized at the ceremonies. All students whose work was juried in the Young Artists’ Gallery will receive a certificate to be picked up at the reception.

EXHIBITION CLOSING Artwork pick up is on Monday, March 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. or from the Art Department office Tuesday, March 18 through Thursday, March 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment with Armalyn De La O, 909-838-3716.

Following the exhibition closing, an online gallery of the 2025 selected Young Artists’ Gallery work will still be accessible.
